Kerala, India, faces increasing economic risks from climate change, particularly across climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, tourism, infrastructure, and public health. This study examines the economic dimensions of climate change and evaluates policy adaptation measures using district-level evidence from Kerala for the period 2015–2024. Employing a mixed-methods approach that integrates sectoral economic indicators, historical climate data, and policy document analysis, the study assesses productivity losses, infrastructure damages, and rising health-related expenditures associated with climate variability and extreme weather events.

A conceptual framework linking climate risks, economic outcomes, and policy interventions is developed to evaluate adaptation effectiveness across districts. The findings reveal significant spatial variation in vulnerability, with districts such as Wayanad, Idukki, and Alappuzha exhibiting high economic exposure, while districts with stronger institutional capacity demonstrate greater resilience. The study underscores the importance of locally tailored adaptation strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to mitigate economic losses and promote climate-resilient development. By providing district-level empirical insights, the paper contributes to evidence-based climate policy planning in tropical regions.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Storytelling in Economics Education: Development of Measurement Scales

BY:   Mohit Jain
Indian Journal of Social and Economic Development, Year:2025, Vol.1 (1-2), PP.7-32
Received: 28 March 2025   |   Revised: 08 May 2025   |   Accepted: 17 May 2025   |   Publication: 22 December 2025

This study examines the effectiveness of storytelling as a pedagogical tool in economics education compared to traditional textbook methods. While textbooks provide structure, they often fail to engage students deeply. Storytelling, by presenting economic concepts in relatable narratives, can enhance comprehension, engagement, and retention. The study develops and validates a measurement scale—the TIDE (The Indian Dream Economics) Scale—to assess student preferences and perceptions of storytelling in economics classrooms.

The instrument was designed through student feedback, expert review, and pilot testing. An initial pool of 60 items was refined to 24 after factor analysis with 700 participants. The scale captures five dimensions: effectiveness and engagement, interest, understanding, retention, and adaptability/relevance. Reliability testing yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.92, indicating strong internal consistency. A composite TIDE Index was also developed to quantify overall effectiveness.

Findings confirm storytelling’s multidimensional impact, highlighting its ability to make economics more accessible and meaningful. The validated scale offers a robust tool for educators and researchers, enabling curriculum design that balances narrative and traditional methods. This study contributes to educational measurement by introducing a comprehensive, context-specific scale for evaluating innovative teaching strategies.

The jaggery industry has been considered as one of the small-scale cottage industries in India. To examine the cost and returns of jaggery production and converting sugarcane processing into jaggery and also to estimate comparative economics and its break even analysis was carried out in Bidar and Belagavi Districts of Karnataka State. The primary data was collected from 60 jaggery producers and 60 sugarcane growers selling their produce to the sugar factories of Bidar and Belagavi districts during the agricultural year 2021-22. Multistage random sampling technique was used for the selection of sample respondents. Findings of the study revealed that, In Bidar district, the total cost incurred per jaggery unit during a crushing season was Rs. 6,58,317 of which, variable cost and fixed cost constituted 92.08 per cent and 7.92 per cent of the total cost, respectively, whereas in case of belgaum total cost was Rs. 1027375. The findings also estimated the Returns per rupee of investment was 2.24 which was higher than that of farmers selling their produce to sugar factories with a ratio of 1.96. Whereas in Belagavi district, returns per rupee of investment was 2.60 which was higher than farmers selling their produce to sugar factories with a ratio of 2.29. Hence the study concluded that jaggery production was a profitable business venture in the study area and suggested the need to undertake research for technology upgradation of jaggery units for increased efficiency and output.

This study explores the economic hardships and social marginalization of the Banjara community in Telangana, focusing on historical exclusion, cultural erosion, and weak institutional support. Despite constitutional safeguards, welfare schemes, and the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, Banjaras living in Thandas continue to face landlessness, debt, poor education, inadequate healthcare, and limited political representation. Field data from Warangal and Khammam reveal that poverty, gender roles, and traditional practices worsen their socio-economic challenges. Issues such as dowry-related debt, high fertility, insecure land tenure, and the commercialization of festivals further increase vulnerability. A growing concern is the rising alcohol consumption among Banjara women, often used as a coping mechanism for financial stress. Findings indicate that development programs are ineffective unless they incorporate cultural sensitivity, gender awareness, and community participation. The paper calls for rethinking tribal development policy to better align legislation with the lived realities of marginalized communities.

The central idea of this research study is that IMEC will give India an exceptional potential to position itself as the key economic center and critical connecting node between the Indo-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. By properly using this program, India may strengthen its commerce, infrastructure, and geopolitical influence, eventually establishing itself as a worldwide economic force. In order to highlight the critical role played by IMEC, this study takes a multidisciplinary approach, weaving together factual economic data, geopolitical implications, and diplomatic ramifications. This study also explores the importance of India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) and its transformative potential as geopolitical tool. Specifically, it looks at how the IMEC has shaped diplomatic ties within the Indo-Pacific region and how it affects the Indian economy and the G-20 countries. With its ability to connect economies across continents, IMEC is a unique model that has a big impact on trade dynamics and regional geopolitics. Supported by comprehensive analysis and factual data, this research makes a significant contribution to the growing conversation about economic corridors, their influence on geopolitics, and their function as a catalyst for changing commerce, diplomacy, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Road safety is integral of the socio-economic development of any state/Country. Safer roads ensure access to support economic participation and social inclusion, because it reduces the fatalities, injuries and it also ensures access to essential services, employment, and education. By developing a sustainable transport system & investment in road safety can significantly decrease the economic burdens from road crashes and it will be a crucial component of a nation’s growth and well-being.

The “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030” has been developed with an ambitious objective to prevent at least 50% of road traffic deaths, injuries by 2030 at globally. As per recent UN-SGD1 (United Nations Sustainable Development Group), people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to be involved in road crashes. According to World Bank2, India has just 1 % of the world’s total number of vehicles, it accounts for almost 10% of all road accident deaths. Majority of Indian states are unlikely to meet the objective of 2021-30 plan due to key challenges like weak enforcement, inadequate infrastructure, insufficient focus on education and awareness programs, role of NGOs in Road Safety implementation, lack of road data to implement sustainable engineering safety measures and also not highlight the reason behind the crash – Who? Why? How? How could. This article focused on two states in India i.e., Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as a case study, discussed the major existing challenges, measures to support the state for improvement of socio-economic status and recommended measures.

Despite the financial reforms of the government through Jan Dhan Yojana and the RBI, the financial penetration is low among the poor, women, and illiterate in India. This paper examines the factors that influence formal institutional account holding and the sources of borrowing in India, using the World Bank financial inclusion survey (Global Findex). The binary logit model of account holding status and multinomial logit model of the choice of borrowing from formal and informal financial institutions are estimated. The estimated results show that an individual’s savings frequency and wage earnings influence the account holding status in formal financial institutions. Females have lesser access to owning bank accounts as well as borrowing from formal sources. Less educated people and the poor mostly resort to informal borrowing as they are not exposed to the financial market, and even if exposed, they do not have collateral security for formal institutional credit.
