VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY

SPECIAL EDITION On VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY: Guest Editor: Alison L. Kahn, Stanford University, USA

THEME: TALES FROM THE FIELD:VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO STORYTELLING FROM ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELDWORK EXPERIENCES

This is a Call for Papers from ethnographers who would like to share stories from the field in visual and audio-visual forms of storytelling for a special digital edition of The Indian Journal of Anthropological Research. Practising visual anthropology has taken a few new turns in ethnographic fieldwork over the last ten years, as many researchers and the participants in their projects now have access to smart technologies. It is important that we, as anthropologists, situate ourselves within the stories we are trying to tell.

Contributions from authors should include text, audio, or both (in English) to explain the intention of the project and include material that is of interest to the field of material and visual anthropology, foregrounding cultural elements, such as arts and crafts, rituals, dance, music, body art, object collections, film, and architecture. Artistic expressions of the researcher often permit an audience to gain an insight into the visual and psychological landscapes of their field experiences. Using digital audio-visual technologies also raises questions about intentions behind the ethnographer’s approach to data collecting. Here we are seeking contributions from ethnographers who reveal reflexive, participatory, poetic, and collaborative ways of expression that include photography, drawing, painting, music, and storytelling in audio and visual forms.
